Retired Major Arthur Miles McPhail died Saturday, February 12, 1994, at his home in Norman, Oklahoma. He was 71.
A member of the Choctaw Tribe, he was the son of Elbert Gates and Bertha (Brewer) McPhail and the grandson of original enrollee Laura Kate Burton McPhail. He was born June 3, 1922 at Comanche, Oklahoma. He graduated from Comanche High School in 1940 and later attended the University of Oklahoma.
On May 24, 1951,he was married to Doris June Hurst in Kansas City, Kansas. They moved to Norman in 1955 from Comanche.
McPhail served in the military in Panama, in World War II in Italy, and in the Korean War. He was a retired major in the U. S. Army and was a recipent of the Bronze Star. He was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service from 1957 until his retirement in 1980.
He was past president of the Norman Civitan Club, a member of the Moose Lodge, and a volunteer for the Girl Scouts of America.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris June in May, 1984; a grandson, Michael James Hastings; a sister, Martha Elizabeth Douglas and his parents.
He is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Jane and Rick Harris, of Norman, Oklahoma, Joan and Rick Veal of Edmond, Oklahoma and Jennifer Hastings and Jonica McPhail of Norman; grandchildren, Luke and Miles Harris of Norman, Karly and Kristen Veal of Edmond, Stephen Bussell of Red Stone Arsenal, Alabama, Elaura Hastings of Norman, Justin Gentry of Columbia, Maryland, and Devon McPhail of Norman; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gates, II and Loretta McPhail of Duncan, Oklahoma and Preston and Billie McPhail of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a sister, Frances Ireland of Lawton, Oklahoma; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his long-time companion, Carol Garrison.
Officiating was his nephew, the Rev. Derald Douglas of Lufkin, Texas. The bagpiper played "Amazing Grave". Bearers are Rick Harris, Rick Veal, Luke Harris, Miles Harris, Steve Bussell, and Wilton Berry. Honorary bearers are Justin Gentry, Dean Gentry, and Tim Frost. U.S. Army personal from Fort Sill, Oklahoma performed the military honors.
Services are under the direction of Mayes Funeral Directors. The family has suggested the American Cancer Society, 2221 W. Lindsey, Suite 423, Norman, OK 73069, or The American Heart Association, 2601 NW Expressway, Suite 1200, Oklahoma City, OK 73112, as appropriate memorials.
