Mary grew up in rural Neosho County of Kansas and graduated from Erie High School in May 1927. She graduated from the business college in Parsons in 1928. She worked in Erie for Alderson Hardware and Neosho County Farm Bureau. She moved to Manhattan and worked for the Kansas Extension Service. She managed the first lunch program at the Parsons elementary schools in 1955.
She and her husband moved to Vinita, Okla., and owned Dari-Delite. They purchased Dari-O in Bentonville, Ark., in 1961 and operated it until their retirement in 1977.
They returned to Erie, KS in 1978. She moved to Parsons in 1993 after her husband died to be closer to family and friends.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Parsons, was a longtime member of "Young" Mothers Club and the Beauceant organization. She was a den mother in Vinita. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Senior Center in Erie.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed; Daughter, Nancy; 2 brothers, Fred & Wallace Newell;
Sister-In-Law, Mandy (Owens) Franse and husband, Buzz Franse; Brother-In-Law, Jim Schildgen.

Mary is survived by 5 of her 6 children and spouses; Mary Catherine (Chuck), Margaret Jo "Peggy" (Lou), Tom (Sherron), Jim (April), Fred (Rhonda).   Brother & Sister-In-Laws, Kitty (Owens) Schildgen (2009), Ben Owens & wife Ruth Owens (2009).

Funeral service at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Mark Young and the Rev. Fred Jordan officiating. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery in Erie, KS. Arrangements are under the direction of Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons, KS.
