Elmer was a retired auto dealer and lived at Great Island in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts. While living in Worcester, he was the president and treasurer of the Heywood-Brunmark Ford dealership, retiring in 1956.
He was also a Navy veteran of World War I, and was a member of the American Legion, the Masons, Worcester Country Club and Worcester Lions Club, among others.
