David was the only son and youngest of 2 children born ten months apart to Marvin Leroy "Marv" Hughey (b. 1938 in Michigan) and Janet Ann "Jan" Elliott (b. 1939 in Indiana). His sister's name is Debra Gayle (b. 1961). Dave also had a foster sister during the years of 1973-1977 named Ruth Irene Clark (b. 1961). Ruth is his older sister Debra Gayle "Debbie" (Paul) Parsons' age. Ruth married Tim Ford in TN. Both of Dave's sisters live in Elkhart, Indiana with their husbands and both have three children. Dave preceded his parents in death. They survive and live in Mishawaka, Indiana.

Dave loved cars, mechanics, playing in his sandbox as a boy, Nascar, driving a semi like his father, working security, and even delivered "The Penny Saver" papers as a boy. He loved fixing up an old 1968 Barracuda his father gave him. Dave loved his nieces Stephanie and Jennifer and his nephew Ben and spoiled them with nice gifts at Christimastime, then got down on the floor and played with them. David enjoyed raising his young daughter Hannah Elizabeth and loved her very much. He also helped his longtime girlfriend Sherrie raise her other 2 girls Samantha and Alexandra. After having difficulty swallowing, a June 2005 diagnosis of esophageal cancer quickly took his life within 5 months. He never smoked or drank and it seemed unfair that such a horrible death should befall such a great young man. He is sorely missed by his family.

"Synopsis of Dave's Life" by Janet Ann "Jan" Elliott Hughey (Dave's mother) Written for the back of Dave's funeral service memorial card:

"David Mark Hughey, of Muncie, Ind., came into this world 23 days early and suffered from Hyaline Membrane Disease. The Lord miraculously saved his life. This was March 28, 1962, born to the union of Marvin Leroy Hughey and Janet Ann Elliott, in Mishawaka, Ind. David was in the first graduating class of Community Baptist School in South Bend. He was the first student driver at the school.

David especially enjoyed belonging to the Law Enforcement Explorer Scouts #963 and later became a county police officer for a short while. He also worked security at I/N Tek and Gurley Leep. He had delivered the Penny Saver for six years, even while working as a bagger at Wilt's Grocery Store as a teen.

Just before Dave was 13, his Sunday School teacher, Bim Rowley, told Marv he had led Dave to the Lord that day in February, 1975. To honor that, his mother baked him a cake, he enthusiastically ran up the stair steps and made the cake fall. He loved standing on a pew while singing 'Trust and Obey' as s child, but it went: Truss an Dobey!

Dave was a very sick baby with Hyaline Membrane Disease (the same thing that took Patrick Bouvier Kennedy shortly after birth) when he was born, but the Lord spared his life. Remembering Dave throughout the years, a few things come to mind: He was maybe 3 or 4 when he had his first pizza. He said, 'I like it -- but don't like the taste of it."

One morning his friend Tom came to play with him, but Dave was not dressed yet, Jan told him to get ready to go outside and play, After several long minutes, Jan checked on him. Seeing Dave sprawled on his back looking at the ceiling, still in his pj's, she asked what he was doing? 'I'm thinking,' Dave replied. Jan asked, 'What are you thinking about?' Dave said, 'Tom's kite.' Jan told him he could get dressed while he was thinking. Tom had left since he got so tired of waiting.

Dave said he liked at the David's in the Bible, the boy who killed the giant, and the king. Jan told him they were the same David. Dave was surprised.

When we were returning home from Battle Creek on a 4th of July and saw fireworks in the distance along the way. Debbie was about 5 or 6 and asked Dave how fireworks went off? Dave said, 'A man throws them up in the air and God lights a match.'

When the children were put in a Christian school, he should have been in 7th grade, but due to the setback of his birth he was doing 2nd and 3rd grade work in public school and the best level they would allow for him in the Christian school was to be in 5th grade. A wonderful Christian teacher, Mrs. Yochim, worked with him and Dave came up 2 and 3 grade levels in a 9-month period; he received a certificate for 'Greatest Academic Achievement' that year. Extra-curricular activities were removed so he could concentrate on his studies; however we requested he be able to continue playing the cornet in the band. He thought he would be behind, but was told since he had played in the public school system he was ahead of his class now. He played a solo in the Christmas concert that year.

Dave was loyal and that was proved by delivering the Penny Saver weekly giveaway paper for 6 years - well into his teens even while holding a bagger job at Wilt's Grocery Store. He trudged through deep snow, often, and people appreciated him only if they were missed and wanted their paper! Just once did he receive a Christmas tip from a customer over that span. He taught his parents that it's easier to trudge thought the snow with the pant legs over the boots since he could change his wet pants at home and keep his feet dry while walking.

He had another close call when he fell from the roof of a building in September, 1999 that he was painting - on the job alone. That is another chapter in Jan's book: 'Topsey Turvey' is the one.

Dave became a truck driver like his father, and he so delighted in his six-year-old daughter, Hannah. He was helping Sherrie raise her two other daughters as well, Samantha and Alexandra. On June 21, 2005 he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer which took his young life on November 7, 2005. Dave did not smoke or drink. He had dreams of finishing their house but the cancer, radiation treatments and chemo-therapies made him so sick he had no strength to work to earn money or continue to build the house in Muncie."
