Raymond, known as "Harry," was the son of Joseph J. "Joe" Knoll (1867-1943) and Mary Louise Leider. Harry had a twin brother named Ralph R Knoll (b. 10 Aug 1901 d. Feb 1977) who died just a few months before him. He had a younger sister named Mildred Louise Knoll Butts. He also had a younger brother named Carl C. Knoll.

Harry married divorcee Virginia Fosten Chupp (Elliott) who had 2 small children and helped her raise them. He had no children of his own. He loved his family. He died in a nursing home in Elkhart, Indiana. Harry is buried next to one of his step grandsons (David Mark "Dave" Hughey).
