Byrdella was born to John and Elsie (Wussow) Erks on February 9, 1927 in Pipestone, Minnesota. She grew up and lived most of her childhood in Pipestone County, Minnesota. On April 2, 1948 she was united in marriage to Lorence "Bud" Thomas at St. James Lutheran Church, in Holland, Minnesota. In the earlier years of their marriage, they made their living as farmers at several places in Eastern South Dakota. In 1969 they moved to Sioux Falls, were Byrdella became employed at Raven Industries, and Bud became a route driver for the Metz Baking Company. In 1991, they retired and moved to Milbank, South Dakota. While visitng her daughter in Whitewood, South Dakota, Berdie suffered an apparent heart attack and died on Thursday, December 26, 2002, at the age of 75 years, 10 months, 17 days.

Berdie was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank, South Dakota. She enjoyed shopping, decorating her house, sewing, knitting, bowling, and playing cards and bingo. She always had a welcome home with a warm cup of coffee and a tender smile. She loved to travel and go hunting and fishing with Bud, where she even won a fishing contest for the biggest fish. She was known for her cooking, and out of 56 entries, she was given the Grand Prize for her pickled fish recipe. She loved being with her family, especially hanging out with her grandsons.

She is lovingly remembered by her two children, Larry Joe Thomas, and his wife Mary, Bonnie Schramel and her husband Tom. And four grandsons.
