Mary Ann was the daughter of Capt. John Milner (1774-1851) and Susannah McNeese (1778-1850). She was the wife of Judge John B. Knowles in Chattooga county and they had 6 children: Sarah Ann, Harriet Elizabeth, Martha Emaline, Nancy C., Henry L. and Mary Carolyn.

After John died in 1886, she lived with and helped care for her daughter, Sarah Ann, who had married Amos A. Strange. Over the years, Sarah Ann had become an invalid from arthritis. According to her great-granddaughter, Lillian Carroll Layton (my grandmother), Mary Ann hated to ride in buggies, unless necessary, so she usually walked everywhere, for miles, even at age 76. Some of Lillian's fondest memories were being asked to go along with her, sometimes.

Her daughter, Sarah Ann, passed away on June 19, 1897, and Mary Ann stayed on to help the family. Sadly, less than a month later, she walked several miles to another daughter's home for a visit. On the way back home, she fell into a roadside ditch, breaking her hip. Grandma said that when Mary Ann was late getting home, a search quickly began, but by the time she was found, she had lain there for several hours. Mary Ann was taken home to recover, but developed pneumonia. Several days later, on July 7th, she passed away, surrounded by her family and friends, and entered into glory to be with our Lord, and be reunited with her husband and daughter.
