William E. Womack was born Nov. 13, 1832 in Putnam County, GA, son of John E. Womack & Nancy Louisa Stone Womack. By 1850, the family was living in Independence Co., AR. William served in Co. E, 7th Reg't., Arkansas Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Sgt. April 9, 1862 and to 1rst Sgt. May 16, 1862. He married Sarah Ann Horn in 1863 in Independence Co., AR, and had 3 sons and 3 daughters. In late 1876, after his father's death, the family started to Texas, in a covered wagon, to join other family members. At Jefferson, TX, William became ill and died of pneumonia, Feb. 7, 1877. He was buried there, and Sarah Ann, with the children, continued the journey to Denton County, TX to live with her brother-in-law, Hope H. Womack and his family.
