Captain Earl Abbott of the 328th Fighter Squadron of the 352nd Fighter Group with his P-47 Thunderbolt "Sandra Lee" PE-A, 42-8435. Abbott was CO of the 328th FS from 26 December - 24 January 1945 when he failed to return from a mission. He was last seen in the pursuit of a Me 109 in the vicinity of Aachen Germany. To date his remains have not been located.

The date of death showing as at January 2015 is incorrect-that is the ‘official’ date of death-it should be a year and a day prior to this.

On this wall, running from the entrance to the Memorial chapel, are inscribed the names of 5127 Americans who were either Missing in Action or Buried at Sea.The grave markers show the date of death, but the Tablets of the Missing do not, because without confirmed information to the contrary, the date of death of those who are listed as missing in action, lost or buried at sea in WWII is a presumed date of death established by a military review board, usually as a year and a day from that which the individual was placed in missing status. The incident date and the presumed date of death are then not the same.
