Merle L. Bowser, 1 Pioneer Road, Sylvan Heights, passed away Thursday morning September 3, at the Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Bowser was born in Apollo, PA, and was a son of the late William A. and Dessie Geiger Bowser. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in mechanical engineering and, while at the university, served as coach at the ROTC rifle team.
After graduation he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps where he served in the United States Army as a first lieutenant. He was sent to this area to assist in the organization of the Sizerville CCC camp and later served as Exchange Officer at the North Creek Camp.
Mr. Bowser was a resident of Roselle, NJ, for 25 years and was employed as a senior engineer for Esso Research and Engineering in Bayway, Linden, NJ. His duties took him around the world and joined the Girdler Construction Company of Louisville, Kentucky as a consulting engineer. Following a seven-month assignment in Aruba, Netherlands, West Indies, he retired in 1964 and moved to Emporium.
Mr. Bowser was married in Lock Haven, PA, August 19, 1939, to the former Edna "Mayme" Hickoff, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, Dr. Barry L. Bowser of Houston, Texas, William Bowser, of Chillicothe, Ohio; one daughter Mrs. Gerard (Susan) Mueller of Girard, PA; a sister, Mrs. John S. (Ethel) Patton of Springfield, Ohio; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was a life member of the Cameron County Historical Society and was a life member of the Esso Engineering Club.
As requested, Mr. Bowser's remains were donated to the Humanities Gifts Registry at the University of Pittsburgh. There was no visitation, and private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions, in memory of Mr. Bowser, may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Cameron County Little Museum.
