Samantha Pearline Hancock was born in Campbell County, Virginia in 1899. She was the daughter of Charles Hancock and Louise "Lula" Overstreet. She was nicknamed "Charley" from birth after her father who died shortly before she was born. Some folks also called her "Pearl."

She was raised on the farm of William Baldwin Clay. He generously cared for the family after the death of Charles Hancock.

Samantha married Samuel Fred Vess and their first child, Samuel Arthur, was born in 1915. They lived in Roanoke and had three more children, Laura Elizabeth, Carl F, and Helen Pauline.

Samuel Fred died young in 1927 from a gastric ulcer.

Samantha married Leonard Milton Vess in 1929 and they had one child, Dorothy Genevieve.

Tragically, Leonard died young in 1938, leaving Samantha a widow once more.

After Leonard's death, the family frequently moved from one rented home to another because the family income was small. As the children reached employable ages, they went to work. Finally, in 1945, the family income was enough to support the purchase of a home in Salem that is still in the family to this day.

Much of Samantha's family had moved to Florida, along with William Baldwin Clay. In her later years, she traveled often to visit them. She would stay in Florida for long periods, but always returned "home" to Salem.
