Montana pioneer and educator Lillian Elaine Partelow Beamish, 94, of Thompson Falls died Sunday, March 9, 1997 at her home in Thompson Falls.

Memorial graveside services are to be held Saturday, April 12, at 2 p.m. at Plains Cemetery with Rebekah Lodge graveside rites.

Lillian was born Jan. 3, 1903 at Butte to Oscar Milton and Hilda Halvorson Partelow. She was graduated from Butte High School in 1921, took graduate work at Butte High, and entered Montana State Normal School (now Western Montana College) at Dillon in 1923. She received her bachelor of arts degree in education in 1966, after attending many summer sessions.

Her first teaching job was in Granite County in 1922 at the Rock Creek School. Next, she taught at Lynch Creek School near Plains in 1925.

In 1927, Lillian and Robert Cecil Beamish of Plains were married. They raised three children, Robert Jr., Joyce and Jean.

Lillian assisted with 4-H activities from 1938-1940. In 1940, the family moved into Plains from the farm they resided on up Lynch Creek. Lillian worked as a nurse for new mothers in 1941 and 1942. In 1942 and 1943, she worked for McGowan Grocery. She began teaching again at Paradise, and finished her teaching career in Thompson Falls, where she taught from 1958 until 1971.

Before resuming her teaching career, Lillian worked at the U.S. Post Office, the telephone company and served as superintendent of the Sunday school for the United Methodist Church of Plains.

She was the mayor of Plains in the early 1950s-the only female to serve in that position as of 1997.

She worked at the Sanders County Fair from the 1930s until she resumed teaching, returning to working at the fair in 1977.

Lil was an avid bowler, bowling from 1960 to 1994. She got the "big four" in 1968 and was the "oldest bowler" in 1980 and in 1993.

She was a member of the Homemakers, starting at Plains in the early 1940s and transferring to Thompson Falls in 1972. She served as president of the Sanders County Council for Senior Citizens and was a board member of the Human Resources in 1971. Lillian was a 50-year member of the Rebekah Lodge, beginning at Fidelity Lodge No. 50 at Plains in 1946, and transferring to Wild Rose Lodge No. 48 at Thompson Falls in the late 1950s.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1973; four sisters, Alice, Selma, Corrine and Olga; and by a brother, Rufus.

Coffelt-Bunch Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
