He was born October 17, 1896 in Clay County, IL, the son of Richard and Helen Padgett Routt. He married Edna Collins December 27, 1970 and she survives.
He was a retired farmer and taught school in Richland, Clay, and Wayne Counties. He was a member of the Blair United Methodist Church in Richland County, and a certified lay speaker for the United Methodist Church.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four step-children, Larry Collins, Jerry Collins, Mary Collins Richards, Sarah Collins; a sister, Lou Etta Russell; six step-grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Goodwine Funeral Home in Palesting with burial in the Clay City Cemetery.
