The Lord called Amado Rincon Benavidez, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather home on Monday March 7, 2016. He is now with his beloved wife Eusebia and grandson Aaron whom he thought about every day since their departure. He was born in Cotulla, Texas, September, 13, 1929, to Genoveva Rincon Benavidez and Rafael Benavidez. He was preceded in death by his brothers Octaviano, Roman, Rafael and sisters Felix Montemayor and Genoveva Benavidez.
Amado proudly served his beloved La Salle County as Constable for 24 years. And, for many years he had a truck hauling and construction business. He was an exemplary father, grandfather and great-grandfather, even though he lost his father at a very early age. His family responsibilities started when he was still a child and he had to work to help his older brother Rafael support their mother and siblings.
His children and numerous nephews and nieces were Amado's priorities. He and his wife would travel over a hundred miles, from Cotulla to Victoria, Austin and other Texas cities, to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events.
While life circumstances didn’t allow him to get much of an education, and he was forced to be a migrant worker while he was still very young, he could not have been prouder than when all of his children graduated from high school, when a daughter and granddaughter attained college Master degrees, another daughter and grandson a Bachelor of Science degree, and several grandchildren getting professional certifications in automobile mechanics, nursing and as therapist.
Amado was especially proud of his son Rene, who went on to serve as La Salle County Sheriff and County Commissioner, and of his youngest children, Missy Keller who made sure he was as comfortable as possible and his youngest son who was always trying to encourage him in the battle against cancer. He was immensely grateful for the wonderful care his son-in-law Jeff Keller provided him until the very end.
He is survived by his children Susana Benavidez, Marisela Rodriguez (Raul), La Salle County Commissioner Rene Benavidez (Hilda), Arnie Benavidez (Lydia) and Missy Keller (Jeff); grandchildren Dave Benavidez (Eden), J.R Rodriguez, Mariel McCray, Luis (Big J) Benavidez (Korina), A.J. Benavidez, Ronnie Mendiola (Bobby), Bradley Keller and Alejandro (Alex) Benavidez, as well as great-grandchildren Abrianna (Abri) Marie McCray, Louie Benavidez, Jolie Benavidez, Ava and Addie Benavidez, Tiana Mendiola and Emerie Bernice McPherson; his beloved sister Anita Moreno, brother Jacinto Benavidez, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces/nephews and great-grand-nieces/nephews. His eldest nephew Rafael Benavides, from Fresno, California, visited him a couple of weeks before Amado’s passing and said, “I will always remember my Tio Amado as always being very kind and loving.” And, his niece Tomi Montemayor Vaughn said the following, “Tio Amado was the epitome of integrity, dignity and honesty. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to his family, extended family and friends. It was not the length of life, but the depth of life that made this man loved and respected."
The Rosary will be on Thursday, at 7 p.m., March 10, 2016, at the Peters Funeral Home, 500 N. Main Street, Cotulla, TX 78014; and the funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2016, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 307 S. Main Street, Cotulla, TX 78014. Pallbearers will be Dave Benavidez, J.R. Rodriguez, Luis (Big J Benavidez), A.J. Benavidez, Bradley Keller and Alex Benavidez. Honorary pallbearers will be Mariel McCray and Ronnie Mendiola.
