The Lord called Eusevia (Chevita) Navejar Benavidez, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, home on Sunday June 23, 2013. She was born in Cotulla, Texas, on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929, when the American stock market crashed, and was the youngest child of Pedro Navejar and Carmen Ruiz Navejar, who preceded her in death along with her brothers Felipe, Pedro Jr., Jesus and Jose Navejar; sisters Carmen Hernandez and Teresa Sanchez as well as infant twin brothers and her beloved grandson Aaron Anthony Benavidez.

Chevita was a life-long active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church (as long as her health allowed) where she devoted much of her life to the choir, Las Guadalupanas, annual church festivals, as a Catholic Catechism Doctrine (CCD) teacher and Eucharistic minister. She took her five children when they were growing up to daily Mass and recited the Rosary daily with them during the months of May and June in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary and St. Joseph. She participated in the Welhausen Elementary School Parents-Teachers Association (PTA), worked at the local Ben Franklin Department store and later was co-owner of the Benavidez Neighborhood Convenient Store with her husband. She was an avid reader, enjoyed music and dancing with her husband whom she married on June 26, 1950. Her children’s education was a top priority.

Her maternal devotion transcended beyond her five children to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would travel over a hundred miles, from Cotulla to Victoria, Austin and other Texas cities, to attend her grandchildren’s sporting events in spite of inclement weather. In spite of freezing weather and poor health, she attended her youngest grandson’s last district high school football game in Devine on November, 2011, to watch his team win District and proceed on to the playoffs. In the early 2000s she had a weekly commute to San Antonio for several years so she could care for her first great-grandchild from Monday through Friday.

She is survived by her husband Amado R. Benavidez, children Susana Benavidez, Marisela Rodriguez (Raul), La Salle County Commissioner Luis Rene Benavidez (Hilda), Arnie Benavidez (Lydia) and Missy Keller (Jeff); grandchildren Dave Benavidez (Eden), J.R Rodriguez, Mariel McCray, Big J. Benavidez (Korina), A.J. Benavidez, Ronnie Mendiola (Bobby), Bradley Keller and Alejandro (Alex) Amado Benavidez, as well as great-grandchildren Abri McCray, Louie Benavidez, Jolie Benavidez, Ava and Addie Benavidez.

The Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Friday, June 28, 2013, at the Peters Funeral Home (www.peters-fh.com), 500 N. Main Street, Cotulla, TX 78014; and the funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 307 S. Main Street, Cotulla, TX 78014. Pallbearers will be Dave Benavidez, J.R. Rodriguez, Big J. Benavidez, A.J. Benavidez, Bradley Keller and Alex Benavidez. Honorary pallbearers will be Mariel McCray and Ronnie Mendiola.
