`Louis was born, Louis Allen Lawrence in 1881, the son of Edward D. Lawrence and Jennie (Wilkinson) Lawrence. The marriage between Louis' parents ended in either divorce or separation sometime between 1885 and 1900. Louis' mother, Jennie, first married Thomas Baker in 1862. Thomas Baker died in 1879. The widowed Mrs. Jennie Baker married Edward Lawrence in late 1880 or early 1881. Jennie is recorded on the 1900 census as widowed and has taken back the last name of Baker. Either Louis or his mother must have wanted Louis to use the name Baker as well, and not to be associated with Edward Lawrence. Jennie died in 1904. Louis' father was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers and died in 1916. [Special thanks to Mary, for this information update, March 2015]
