From the official records of Fort Buford: "...from the tall grass rose fully two hundred hideously painted and yelling savages, each and all eager for his scalp. He did not run... commenced to pump his Winchester...five shots and five dead Indians, but on the sixth shot the plunger of his rifle became misplaced, and with a despairing cry he sprang forward with his gun as a club. He was instantly hacked to pieces with tomahawks and knife pointed war clubs. "I have helped to kill a great many white people along his river," said Red Shirt, Unkpapa chief, "but I never saw one fight so well or die so bravely as that boy at the mouth of the Yellowstone [River]." (signed by Joseph Henry Taylor).
