Carolyn received her education at Mount Union College and at the University of Wisconsin. She was a member of the Alliance Women's Club, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Coterie Club, Council of the Alliance Day Nursery, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Carolyn was an Executive Secretary at the American Red Cross. She was a Presbyterian.
