Born in Cornwall, Connecticut, the youngest child of Eleanor Johnson and Deacon Benjamin Gold. Her father helped found the Foreign Mission School, and the Gold family often hosted students at their home. It was at one of these social events that Harriet met Elias Boudinot of the Cherokee nation. She and Elias exchanged letters for several years, and in 1825 Harriet asked her father for permission to marry him. Her family objected, but Harriet held firm, although the family strife took a heavy toll on her health before her parents relented. They were married in a small private ceremony on March 28, 1826. They moved to the Cherokee capital, New Echota. She was reportedly given the Cherokee name Kalahdee, and by all accounts had a contented marriage. She and Elias had six children; Eleanor, Mary, William, Sarah, Elias, and Franklin, before she succumbed to complications from childbirth at the age of 30.
