World War II German Luftwaffe Ace. He was a World War II Stuka Divebomber pilot who compiled an amazing record of destruction on the Russian front. He flew over two thousand combat missions destroying hundreds of tanks, gun emplacements and some one thousand combat vehicles of various types. His exploits even extended to Russian Naval craft having destroyed three major warships and hundreds of smaller landing craft. Colonel Rudel surrendered to American forces after the conclusion of the war and was kept in captivity until June of 1946 at which time he emigrated to Argentina to become an advisor to the air force. He returned to Germany and settled in Kufstein, Austria and became a well-known mountain climber despite losing a leg during a combat mission. It is amazing owing to his many exploits during the war, downed numerious times during combat resulting in serious injuries, he died of natural causes (cerebral hemorrhage) after being taken to the hospital at Rosenheim, Germany.
