Went by the name Elmer and usually signed his name J. Elmer Weaver. As kids, we always knew him as Pappy at the Airport.
Pappy was a packrat in the truest sense of the word. As children, he gave our parents a "camp" on the outskirts of Jersey Shore, PA where we would spend time cutting grass and killing rattlesnakes near the creek on the mountain. Mom & Dad soon gave the place back to him. He also owned a junk yard, a 12 acre riverlot, his own airport and a couple of dozen other properties spread out around Jersey Shore. He originally designed, built and operated the Jersey Shore Airport where he trained pilots for the US Government before and during WWII and gave private lessons later. He was also a Pennsylvania constable and owned a new car(Packard)dealership at one time. He would take us out in the boat, but always go upstream "in case the engine quits". In his younger days he would "barnstorm" under bridges along the river in one of his many planes. His favorite, a bench seat aircoup was a silver gem that he managed to successfully crash, walk away from and then rebuild several times. Alas, Pap was a heavy smoker and lived his final year or two at our parent's home until his death from cancer in 1978. When the IRS was contacted after his death, they had no record of him and consequently caught up with his "back taxes" postumously. Having never had a Social Security number, the Government for whom he had trained pilots, been a Constable, a new car dealer, and bought & sold land and houses, had no record of him ever paying income tax or ever filing a return. A crafty old codger he was.
