Soldier. Paul Maleter was a Hungarian army commander who became sympathetic to the cause of those behind the Hungarian Uprising, one of many who were sent in by the Rakosi regime to quell the unrest in 1956. Instead, he became the highest ranked soldier to switch sides, refusing to shoot demonstrators. In the space of the twelve days, he became the demonstrators' Minister of Defense during the uprising. Maleter was arrested by the Soviets at a meeting where the various parties were to discuss issues of international law. Maleter was, along with Imre Nagy, executed two years later, buried in the Rakoskereszturi cemetery, in an unmarked grave, evidently face down, with his hands and feet tied with barbed wire.

Minister of the Defense. He was a famous martyr of the 1956's Hungarian Revolution - he was executed 16. juny 1958.
Cemetery: Újköztemetõ, Budapest 301. plot, A. 9.
