Fifth Earl of Selkirk. The efforts of Thomas Douglas, who became an earl at a fairly early age, led to the colonization of the Red River Settlement in what was then the Northwest Territories of Canada in the early 1800s. Unfortunately, neither he nor the settlers, nor the administrators that he hired, were experienced enough to withstand the harsh climate and hardships of the new settlements. His project created great tensions and led to the deaths of many of the people he sent to current-day Manitoba. He journeyed, finally, to his colony himself in 1817. He died from tuberculosis a few years later while travelling in France where he was journeying to find a better climate for his condition. His is one of the four statues which flanks the east and west entrances to the Manitoba Legislature buildings.

His grave is actually in Orthez, according to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography.
