Marvin Tracy Bacon was born on August 8, 1926 in Harrisburg, Texas to George Bacon and Helen (Thomas) Bacon. The family moved to South Houston in 1932. After graduating from Pasadena High School in 1944, Marvin joined the World War II effort by enlisting in the United States Army Air Corp. He was stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. He was assigned to the Sea, Air Rescue Division in support of pilots in training.
Prior to his departure, he proposed to the young Mary Louise Moore and made her his bride. The couple made their home in Virginia until his honorable discharge in 1946, when Marvin and Mary Louise returned to the Houston area. It was then that he began his lifelong career in the inland marine industry. He joined the family business, which later became Bacon Towing Co. Inc., and served as the company president until his retirement in 1996. Marvin served on several boards including the American Waterways Operators, Industrial State Bank, Gulf Freeway National Bank, Golfcrest Country Club and the East End YMCA. He is a former member of the Propeller Club of Houston, the Rotary Club of Harrisburg, an Endowed member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, a past supporter of the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, the Pasadena FFA, and a Life Member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. After raising his family in Friendswood, Marvin decided to move to his beloved ranch in Uvalde County, Texas, and enjoy the life of a Hill Country rancher. After many years, Marvin and Mary Louise returned to the Houston area. After the loss of his wife in 2006, Marvin settled in Green Tee Terrace, Pearland, and was fortunate to reunite with many of his lifelong friends. Marvin was a sports enthusiast, pilot and mariner who loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing golf. He was never without a garden, whether it was large or small. Marvin was a wonderful cook and was at his happiest surrounded by his family preparing and sharing a meal, whether it was from his barbecue pit or the kitchen stove. Marvin's love of life was infectious, and his sharing of his memories brought joy and laughter to all who heard them. Marvin never met a stranger, young or old; for him there were only friends and future friends. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen Bacon; his daughter, Sherry Louise; his brother, Lenard; and his wife of 62 years, Mary Louise. He is survived by his brother, J. Roland Bacon; his daughters, Jo Lynn Sallee and her husband, Wesley, and Leslie Marlane Orth and her husband, Christopher; grandchildren Tracie M. Sawyer and her husband, John, Evelyn L. Orth, Miranda A. Sallee and Brenna L. Sallee; and great-granddaughter, Brook M. Sawyer.
