Civil War Union Army Officer. He began his Civil War service when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company B, 4th New Jersey Volunteer Militia on April 24, 1861, less then two weeks after the Confederate firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. He served with his unit through the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign, where it was held in reserve, and was mustered out at the end of July 1861. In August the 4th NJ Militia was re-organized as three-year enlistment unit 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, and on August 17, 1862 Howard King received a commission of 2nd Lieutenant in Company I. He served at this rank through the Spring 1862 Peninsular Campaign, the August 1862 Battle of Second Bull Run and the September 1862 Battle of Crampton's Gap, Maryland. In October 1862 Company H's 1st Lieutenant Thomas R. Grapewine resigned, and on October 21, 1862 Lieutenant King was promoted to 1st Lieutenant to replace him. In March 1863 Company C's Captain Barzilla Ridgway was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and Howard King was advanced to Captain and commander of Company C to fill the vacancy. He commanded his men through the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, the May 1864 Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, the June 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor and the subsequent siege of Petersburg, Virginia. After serving over three years, he was honorably mustered out on September 3, 1863 at the expiration of his enlistment.
