He was the son of Hoyle Smith and Bessie Sinclair Smith.
Dan was a very interesting character and held many odd jobs throughout the years. As a young lad, he joined the circus when it came to town and was put in charge of cleaning up behind the animals. For many years he would hitchhike up north in the spring and work as a bell hop at a resort.
