Marilyn Troll Beattie was born on March 18, 1926, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Elizabeth Harrington Troll and Irving Russell Troll.

She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wells College in 1947. Upon graduation, she worked for the Standard Oil Company in New Jersey, formerly known as Esso, now Exxon. She became part of a team researching where the oil company would build its first overseas refinery following World War II. After an extensive study of Europe, Latin America and Asia, the study group recommended Great Britain and it was approved by the Board of Directors. The building began almost immediately in Fawley, England.

She left Esso to raise a family, a son and daughter. During the Korean War she was a volunteer in the American Red Cross in East Orange, New Jersey. Once, while on duty, a call came through that a vital organ had been donated to a veteran residing at the Bronx, New York Veterans Hospital. The hospital, having been notified was awaiting the organ with the patient on the operating table. The organ, packed in ice was placed in her vehicle and under heavy State Police escort drove to the hospital where the surgery was successfully performed.

Active in community affairs, she served as president of several P.T.O's and volunteered at the local hospital.

In 1970, she decided to return to academic life and studied for a Master's Degree in Political Science at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, with a grant from Drew. She and her children spent a semester in London while she researched for her Master's Thesis. Upon graduation she was appointed to the faculty and became Coordinator of Drew's London Semester abroad and also served as an Instructor in Urban Government. Subsequently she studied in Princeton University's Graduate School's Department of Politics.

In 1971, she married Roland Percival Beattie II and upon the sale of his company in 1983 moved to Ivy. She again became active in Community Affairs by volunteering at Martha Jefferson Hospital where she served two years as President of the Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two children, Jeffrey T. Vawter of Jacksonville, Florida, and Lisa Suits of Bethesda, Maryland.

As a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ivy, she served on the Altar Guild and as Lay reader and Chalice Bearer.

During retirement she and her husband traveled extensively. In addition to travel, her hobbies included tennis and gardening.

A memorial service was held Friday, July 10, 2009, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Ivy, with the Reverend Will Peyton officiating.

Interment followed at the church yard.

Memorial donations may be given to the Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation, 459 Locust Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
