Shirley Dunn Batten, 71, of Gordonsville, Virginia, went to be with the Lord and her loved ones that went before her, on Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at her home, surrounded by her loved ones.
Shirley fought a long and courageous battle of a very devastating disease for 6½ years, with the most devastating being the loss of her eye sight.
Shirley was born March 7, 1935, in Albemarle County. She was the daughter of the late Zack and Virginia Dunn of Albemarle County.
She graduated from Broadus Wood High School in Earlysville, Virginia. She retired from University of Virginia Medical Records department, after 16 years of service.
Shirley was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She loved the Lord and all of his beautiful creations and was a member of Maple Grove Christian Church. She was the rock of her family and always loved bringing her family together for the holidays and other family gatherings. Shirley loved to read the Bible, Danielle Steele books, and the newspaper. She loved working and playing with her flowers and gardening with her "Honey Pete". She always loved to spend time with all of her family and friends either at her home or theirs.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving and very devoted husband of 31 of the happiest years of her life, Harrison "Pete" "Honey" Batten; her five loving and devoted children, for whom she never stopped mothering and being there for, from day one. David Marshal and Gail of Ruckersville, Glenda Marshall of Gordonsville, Becky Oakerson of Charlottesville, Ray Marshall and his wife, Tracy (mom's "other daughter") of Ruckersville, Darlene Cummings and her husband, Calvin, of Charlottesville, and her stepson, Donnie Batten and his wife, Barbara, of Jacksonville, Florida.
She also leaves to cherish her memories, her 10 loving grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, eight loving, supportive siblings, Odell Dunn, of Charlottesville, Dot Kirby of Florence, South Carolina, Jean Dudley of Chesterfield, Virginia, Roy Dunn, of Richmond, Virginia, Athlene Goolsby, of Afton, Kathlene Deane of The Plains, Virginia, Audrey Goolsby, of Afton, and Cora Horn of Charlottesville, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by a sister and brother that died either at birth or shortly thereafter. She is also survived by her stepmother, Lillian Dunn; two stepbrothers, Norman and Newton Morris, and a stepsister, all of Crozet, Virginia. Shirley is also survived by many loving and supportive nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a very special friend of the family. Barbara Stotelmyer, who was always there for her and the family throughout her illness.
The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to Dr. Jeannie Densmore and her nurse, Valerie, for all of their loving care. The staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital (S6 & S7), Dr. Lisa Illig, Chaplain Suzanne Smith, the hospitalist and the wonderful nurses, chaplain, and social worker of The Hospice of the Piedmont, whom all were involved in the last days of care of our their mother. Martha Jefferson Homecare Nurses and therapist, Lisa Lewis, for the many times they were there to help get Shirley well and strong again after her many trips to the hospital over the last 6 1/2 years. The staff and doctors that were involved in her care at the University of Virginia Medical Center, especially her favorite neurologist, Dr. Lyons and her cardiologist, Dr. Chris Lewis. The staff at UVA HealthSouth that cared for her for over a month and got Shirley back to where she could come back home with her family after her initial bout of HSE. The family would also like to thank Evans Oakerson for his generous gift of a lift chair for their mother. It made it so much easier and less painful for her to get up and down.
Shirley will surely be missed and never forgotten for she touched everybody's heart whom she came in contact with. Mom, we love you and will see you again one day.
