Staff Sergeant Nicholas B. Swem of Rissie, NY recently was awarded the Bronze Star posthumously for heroic achievement in action with Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark's Fifth Army in Italy.

Observing two wounded men lying in an exposed position, Swem courageously advanced under small arms, mortar and artillery fire to aid men to his wounded comrades where the casualties lay. After rendering first aid, he guided medical and while attempting to evacuate them to a place of safety, was killed by enemy shell fire.

"His prompt and heroic action, without regard for his own safety, undoubtedly saved the lives of the wounded men and reflects the finest traditions of the military service," state the citation with the award.

Swem served in the 85th "Custer" Infantry Division of the Fifth Army front.

His mother, Mrs. Irene Swem, lives in Rossie.

Full military services for Staff Sgt Nicholas B Swem, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Marion Swem, Rossie were conducted by James Maloy Post 65, American Legion, the Antwerp Legion post, and Silas Wainwright Post No 2338, VFW at 2:00PM Saturday from Sprague Funeral Home, with burial in Riverside cemetery.

Sergeant Swem was born in the town of Antwerp, Dec 8, 1914 and received his education in schools in Antwerp. Before entering the service he had been a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho and later was employed as a truck driver for Carlton Jennings, Antwerp. He was a member of the Methodist church there.

Sergeant Swem was killed in action in the Italian campaign on Sept 18, 1944, 28 months after entering the army. He joined the service May 7, 1942 and was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ,Fort Niagara; Camp Shelby, Miss, and Camp Polk, La., before embarking for abroad. He participated in the North African campaign prior to action in Italy.

Ex-servicemen of theAmerican Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts met the remains at the NYCRR depot at 6:40pm Friday and provided escort to Sprague Funeral Home.

Survivors are his parents, Seven brothers: Edmund, Copenhagen; Roscoe, Wellington and Donald, all of Spragueville; Leon, Munns Corners; Paul, Rossie and Alva, Oxbow; four sisters, Mrs. Wilbur (Margaret) Fuller, Spragueville; Mrs. Betty Hutton, Miss Beulah and Miss Ruth Swem all of Rossie. Four brothers, Wellington, Leon, Paul and Donald, also were members of the American armed forces during the war.
