Ogdensburg Journal - Feb 14, 1942
Word has been received here from the chief of bureau of navigation of the Navy that Silas Alonzo Wainwright, son of Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Wainwright, Pierces Corners, is now officially declared "to have lost his life in the service of his country." Wainwright was pharmacist's mate, first class, on the Dec 7, attack on Pearl Harbor.

The message received by Mr and Mrs. Wainwright from Washington follows: "After exhaustive search it has been found impossible to locate your son, Silas Alonzo Wainwright, pharmacist's mate first class, U.S. navy and he has therefore been officially declared to have lost his life in the services of his country as of Dec 7, 1941. The department expresses to you its sincerest sympathy. Signed, rear Admiral Randall Jacobs."

Wainwright, 26, was born in the town of Macomb, June 22, 1915. He was graduated from Gouverneur high school in 1932. He was a member of the championship football team and took part in the many school activities. He was in the navy about seven years and began his second enlistment in October 1940, and had been stationed on the Arizona for several months. On Dec 23, the chief of the bureau of navigation informed his parents that their son "was missing following action in the service of his country." Christmas cards from him were received by friends in Gouverneur mailed Nov 28.

After he was reported "missing in action," memorial services were held at Gouverneur high school on Jan 12. The flag in front of the school was flown at half staff and during a special afternoon assembly, chief memorial services were held and the flag in the school auditorium was draped with black ribbon.

Surviving besides the mother and father are two brothers, Weldon Jr, of Bigelow and Robert at home; also seven sisters, Harriett, a registered nurse at Watertown; Mrs. Walter Webster, Gouverneur, Helen, Roberta, Helena, Dora and Rachel Wainwright, at home.
