Pvt Edward J Shiels, 22, was killed in action in France on Sept 5, according to a telegram received from the War Department last night by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Shiels, 1000 Mechanic St.
Pvt Shiels was born in this city Dec 19, 1922, the son of John E and Bertha Downey Shiels. He attended the local school and after completing three years at OFA, went to Dearborn, Mich., where he received employment in the Ford Motor plant. He was employed there when inducted into the Army and after training at Fort Ouster, Mich; Camp Forrest, Tenn; Kansas and Arizona he was sent to England. His parents received many letters from England. The final letter they received was from France in which he told them something about the country and that he was in good health. That letter was dated the last of August.
Surviving besides his parents are two sisters, Mrs. Edward (Edna) Lawyer and Mrs. Emma Caloren, both of this city, and one brother, Kenneth Shiels of Dearborn Michigan and two nephews and a niece.
