Pyrites soldier killed in action
Pvt Brayton Smith, 24, met death Jan 10 in Belgium
Canton, Feb 8, 1945 - Pvt Brayton Smith, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fay Smith of Pyrites, was killed in action in Belgium on Jan 10, according to a war department telegram received by his parents. Private Smith had been overseas since early in December, 1944, and had been in the army since last June.
The only word received by Private Smith's parents of their son's movement overseas to the battle front before they were informed of his death came in a V-mail letter from him which arrived the day after the war department message. The letter was written Jan 3, in Belgium, and in it the soldier told of digging fox-holes and of other activities which indicated that he was at or near the front lines. He was in the infantry.
Private smith was a graduate of Knox Memorial High school, Russell, and for two years before entering service last june was employed in an aircraft factory in Maryland. He had also worked on the family farm on the Russell-Pyrites road.
He is survived by this paretns, three brothers, Horace, in the air force in England; Kenneth and Roland, Pyristes, and a sister, Mrs. Norine LaFountain, Pyrites.

Graduating from Knox Memorial high school at Russell with the class of 1939, Pvt Smith before induction June 23, 1944 was employed in the Glenn L. Martin aircraft factory at Baltimore, Md.
He received basic infantry training at Camp Blanding, Fla., and at Fort George C. Meade, Maryland, leaving for overseas in December 1944.
Pvt Smith was a member of Co C 10th Armored Infantry battalion, 4th Armored division.
Pvt Smith was honored by the Purple Heart medal. He sleeps in Grand Failly France. He is survived by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
