Pvt Samuel Sweeney, 23, Winthrop, is the first man inducted by Massena Board 413 to lose his life in action.

His parents, Arthur and Clara Wolcott Sweeney, Winthrop-Fort Jackson Rd., received a telegram yesterday from the War Deaprment announcing that he had been killed in Africa. No further details were given.

The young man was born on the Fourth of July, 1919, in Winthrop. He attended Brasher and Stockholm High School, then worked on the farm prior to entering military service. He had an ox team while on the farm, used it for drawing wood, etc., also he and the ox team were used in many civic parades help in Winthrop.

He entered military Service in March, 1941, was stationed at Camp Wolters, Tex., for a time, then was in camps in eight different states before leaving for overseas in September.

Surviving hare his parents, a brother, Leroy and a sister Flora, and two nephews, David and Arthur Sweeney, all of Wintrhop.

This is also the first death of the 126 men listed on the honor roll for the town of Stockholm.
