Lance Cpl. Eric Hillenburg of Marion, Indiana was a 2001 graduate of Chapel Hill Christian School in Indianapolis, where he was a member of the varsity basketball and soccer teams. He joined the Marines and serving with the 81st Platoon. Eric accomplished the only goal those who loved ever knew he had. All Eric ever wanted to do was be a Marine and serve his country. Just before he left for Iraq, he assured his family that this was something he had to do. He wanted to fight for the freedom of the Iraqi people, and protect America. His father was the pastor of Hope Baptist Church in Indianapolis. He died as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq at age 21.

Eric died during the battle of Fallujah. The day and battle that he dies are extensively covered in the book, Shadow of the Sword," written by Jeremiah Workman. Workman was one of the marines who fought beside Hillenburg that day. Workman's repeated efforts to assist hjis fellow Marines in that battle resulted in him being awarded the Navy Cross. Killed in the same battle were Marines, Raleigh Smith and James Phillips.
