Sgt. Paul Heltzel had worked as an instructor with the Louisiana National Guard Challenge Program's Gillis W. Long Center in St. Gabriel. He was always taking care of soldiers, whether right or wrong, he was always there for his soldiers. Even in his death, Paul was taking care of his injured soldiers. This is how he would want to be remembered. He had recently been given the enlisted soldier of the year award for his work with the task force. He was a native of Indiana and a resident of Baton Rouge. He was a graduate of Franklin High School in Franklin, Ind., and served for 18 years in the active military. He joined the National Guard in Indiana and had served in Iraq for 18 months. He transferred to the Louisiana National Guard when he established residency in Baton Rouge. He was deployed to Iraq for a second tour when the National Guard was activated. Prior to deployment, he worked as an instructor with the Louisiana National Guard Challenge Program, Gillis W. Long Center in Carville. He is survived by his wife, Christy M. Wyble-Heltzel; father and stepmother, Ronald Sr. and Betty Heltzel; son, Austin J. Heltzel; a brother, Ronald; a sister, Melissa Heltzel; stepbrother, Phillip, fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law, Kenneth and Lynn Laurence and Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Wyble Sr., brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charles Wyble Jr., John and Penny Meleski, Peggy Wyble Aucoin and Bryan and Tonya Foss. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marcy Heltzel; daughter, Heidi Noel Heltzel; grandparents, Paul and Margret Heltzel and Gladys and Martin Bunde.
