Scientist. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, he was a very persistent cancer researcher who discovered that tumors generate a network of tiny blood vessels to nourish themselves. His work established an entire branch of cancer research known as anti-angiogenesis therapy. He determined a tumour could be stopped from growing its own blood supply and therefore wither and die. His research successfully applied the concept in mice and resulted in 10 cancer drugs that help control cancer in more than 1 million patients worldwide, including Avastin and Thalomid. Just prior to his death he was Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School and director of the Vascular Biology Program at Children's Hospital Boston. Died in Denver, Colorado of an apparent heart attack.
