Politician. At his death he was the governor of the province of Carinthia and the leader of the right-wing Alliance for Austria's Future (Bündnis Zukunft Österreich, or BZÖ). A populist politician, he was known for his strong anti-immigrant and anti-European Union stances. Best remembered for a series of brazen statements, including praising the Waffen-SS and the employment policies of the former Nazi government. From 1986 to 2000 he was chairman of the Freiheitlichen Partei Österreichs (the Austrian Freedom Party, or FPÖ). In April 2005 he, along with several prominent FPÖ politicians, left the FPÖ and founded the BZÖ, effectively splitting his former party in half. As a result, his actions fostered change in Austria that helped end the dominance of the two biggest political parties, the left-leaning Social Democratic Party and the conservative People's Party. Died as a result of a vehicular accident while enroute to celebrate his mother's 90th birthday.
