World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Timpson, Texas, he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps. In April 1944, he was assigned to the 350th Fighter Group, 12th Air Force, Northern Italy, where he flew 82 combat missions in a P-47 Thunderbolt. On the morning of April 25, 1945, Lieutenant Knight volunteered to lead another attack on the airfield at Bergamo, Italy. During this raid and the previous day on the same airfield, he destroyed six twin engine aircraft and three fighter planes. While returning to the US Air Corps base, his plane was seriously damaged from enemy fire and crashed in the Appennini Mountains. For his actions which hindered the enemy's ability to attack the advancing Allied forces from the air, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. His other awards included two Purple Hearts, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters.
