Actor. Born Sidney Meltzer, he was a lovable comedic talent who appeared on stage, screen and television for nearly 60 years. In 1939, he made his stage debut in the Broadway play "See My Lawyer", followed by the production of "The Magic Touch", using the stage name of Sid Melton. With assistance from his brother screenwriter Louis Meltzer, he broke into motion pictures with a small role in "Shadow of the Thin Man" (1941). His other film credits included "A Wave, a Wac and Marine" (1948), "Western Pacific Agent" (1950), "The Lemon Drop Kid" (1951), "Beau James" (1957) and "Thundering Jets" (1958). For television, he was best known for his role as the incompetent carpenter Alf Monroe on the 1960s, CBS sitcom "Green Acres". He also had reoccurring roles on the TV series "The Danny Thomas Show", "Gomer Pyle", "Make Room for Granddaddy", "The Golden Girls", "Empty Nest" and many more before his retirement in 1999. He died of pneumonia at age 94.
