He was the son of the Honorable William L. Dayton. He served as Assistant Surgeon of the First New Jersey Cavalry and subsequently as Surgeon of the Second Cavalry, with which he remained until the regiment was discharged. He then leased a cotton plantation in Mississippi, and was engaged in its cultivation at the time of his death.
