Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the cavalry regiment known as "Halsted's Horse", which was raised by prominent Trenton, New Jersey jurist and politician William Halsted. He was mustered in as a Private in Company G on September 10, 1861. He served with the unit in it's occupation duties in Washington, DC and through the personelle changes in the regiment in the Winter of 1861-1862 (severe lack of discipline and political intriguing led the the dismissal of Colonel Halsted and a number of officers). The unit was re-designated the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry, and, under the command of Colonel Sir Percy Wyndham, participated in the Spring 1862 Valley Campaign. Private Covert served until he was discharged due to disability at Alexandria, Virginia on August 8, 1862. His son, Elias Covert, would go on to join the 3rd New Jersey Cavalry in the waning days of the war.
