Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was enrolled in the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on August 28, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private in Company D on September 14, 1861. He served a full four years in the field, saw the war through to it's conclusion and was honorably mustered out on July 24, 1865.

In 1879 he applied for a United States Army Pension (Application #290817, Certificate #179232).

CHAPPELL--In this city, on the 29th inst., Henry Chappell, in the 74th year of his age. The relatives and friends of the family, also veterans of the Civil War, are invited to attend the funeral from the residence of his daughter, Mrs Deborah Bennett, rear 43 Bond Street, on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment at Riverview Cemetery.
