Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was enrolled in the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on September 1, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private and Bugler in Company C on September 3, 1861. He was listed as having deserted on October 20, 1862, but was returned to duty on March 31, 1863. He then served until he was honorably discharged on September 16, 1864.

On April 20, 1899 he filed for a United States Army Pension (Application #1224854, Certificate #1084180). On May 4, 1910 his wife, Emma Cox, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #941394, Certificate #702575).
