Civil War Union Army Officer. He was enrolled in the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on August 21, 1861, and was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company K on September 2, 1861. On February 19, 1862 he was promoted to Sergeant Major of the regiment. He served as the unit's top enlisted man through its battles in Virginia in the Spring and Summer of 1862, and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company M on October 21, 1862. He served in this duty for over year, and recieved a promoted to 1st Lieutenant on January 7, 1864, filling the vacancy caused by the promotion of Lieutenant Garrett V. Beekman. He was subsequently wounded in action, and was discharged due to disability from those wounds on October 7, 1864.
