Civil War Union Army Officer. Enlisted in the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry as Corporal in Company A on May 25, 1861. Served at that rank until September 29, 1862, when he was promoted to Sergeant, Company A. Less than a month later he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of the Company, being commissioned on October 19, 1862. Served through the subsequent engagements at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. On August 8, 1863 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and was transferred to Company H, 3rd New Jersey. Captured in battle during the 1864 Overland Campaign, he was imprisoned in Columbia, South Carolina. On November 25, 1864 he was shot and killed while attempting to escape the prison. First buried near the Prison, he was taken back to Mount Holly after the war, and was interred in his family's plot.
