John Ellis was the first soldier from Germantown to die in the Civil War.
Ellis Post 6, Grand Army of the Republic, Germantown, was named for him.
He was first buried in St. Stephen's Methodist Episcopal Church in Germantown and was removed to Ivy Hill in 1900.


Enrolled in the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 27, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private in Company H on June 1, 1861. He died on July 17, 1861 after being accidentally shot by a sentry.
