Private, Co. I, 18th Massachusetts Infantry (August 1861 to February 1863)

Standing 5 ft. 6-1/4 in. tall, with a dark complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair, James first enlisted on April 12, 1861 and was mustered on April 23, 1861, serving as a Private with Company F of the 4th Massachusetts Infantry for 3 months, until he was mustered out on July 23, 1861. During its term of service, the regiment performed duty at Fortress Monroe and fought at Big Bethel in Virginia.

James was a 21-year-old Straw Worker from Foxboro, MA, when he enlisted for a second time at Dedham, MA on August 17, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Massachusetts Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. I. James was recorded as "Present" on Company muster rolls from August 1861 until the May and June 1862, when he was admitted to the hospital due to illness as McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign was being waged. He was discharged from the hospital at Chester, PA due to general debility on February 6, 1893.

James resided at Foxboro, MA following his military service until sometime after 1890 when he removed to Witchita, KS, where he died in 1893.

James Bemis, aged 72 years, died Sunday morning at his farm residence, five miles southwest of the city. The funeral will be from the house at 11 o'clock. Interment in Maple Grove.
