Bessie attended Greenman School for her grade school education and Caldwell High School, graduating in 1929. The day of graduation she practiced marching with her class and then went to work at the locally owned telephone company. She trained on the switchboard until time for Commencement that evening. The next morning she began her long association with the Caldwell Telephone Company, first as a telephone operator, then as chief operator, and last as the bookkeeper when the company entered the new era of dial phones. She also worked as a bookkeeper for Western Light and Power Company, but after two years there, she returned to the telephone company.
