Tom was best friends to Owen Patrick Smith, Inventor and Founder of Greyhound Racing. He was called the "Carpenter Cowboy" and built all the race tracks and lures with O.P. After O.P.'s death he remained close friends and business partners with the Smith family. He was one of the founders of the American Tote company which constructed parimutuel totalizer boards. He also contunied O.P.'s work by Patents and Designs to better Greyhound Racing.
