Rita Dian Sayre, 70, Millersburg, passed away Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at her residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, with pastor Burnetta Armour officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Wayne County or Hospice of Holmes County.

She was born May 20, 1941, in Millersburg, the daughter of Clarence and Alice (Small) Ittner, and married Charles Sayre on Aug. 7, 1964. He survives.

Rita had taught for one year at Maple Heights Junior High School in 1963, and then was a substitute teacher in both West and East Holmes Local School Districts. Since 1978, she was a teacher for the ABLE-GED program.

She was awarded Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center Adult Educator of the year 2001-2002, Ohio Association for Adult and Continuing Education (OAACE) Sharon Davis-Stubbe Award for Outstanding Teacher 2005, the AC-WHJVSD Board of Education District's Distinguished Service Award Dec. 20, 2007, Ohio Senate Recognition of her career and retirement 2007, and the Rita and Lisa Sayre ABLE Award of Excellence which was named after her and her daughter at the AC-WHJVS. She retired in 2008 after working a total of 45 years in education.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Lisa Ann Sayre of Millersburg; a godson, Joshua Randolph; a niece; a nephew; a great-niece; four great-nephews; and a sister, Carol Ittner of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty (Ittner) Krueger.
